SPORT IN SHEFFIELD
Sheffield has a proud sporting heritage and can claim the world’s oldest football club, Sheffield United, as well as the world oldest football ground, Sandygate. Fierce competition between its two professional football clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday can be witnessed in games known as the ‘Steel City Derby’.
The World Snooker Championships are held at the famous Crucible Theatre, with the name paying homage to Benjamin Huntsman’s invention of the ‘crucible’ steel process entrenching the theatre with the city’s proud history. With the UK’s first professional ice hockey team the Sheffield Steelers also honouring the city’s industrial heritage.
