Sheffield is linked into the national motorway network via the M1 and M18 motorways.

Major routes through Sheffield railway station include the Midland Main Line, which links the city to London via the East Midlands, the Cross Country Route which links the East of Scotland and Northeast of England with the West Midlands and the Southwest, and the lines linking Liverpool and Manchester with Hull and East Anglia. Sheffield has a direct connection to continental Europe via St Pancras International. East Midlands Railway run services to St Pancras International and Eurostar run services from there to France and Belgium.

Aside from the main railway station there are five other stations in Sheffield. Meadowhall, a bus, rail and tram interchange, is the second largest station. Dore and Totley, Woodhouse, Chapeltown and Darnall stations serve as commuter stations for suburban communities but are also connected to the national rail network.

The closest international airport to the city is Doncaster Sheffield Airport which is located 18 miles from the city centre and is the fastest growing UK airport outside of London flying to more than 50 destinations and serving over 1.25 million passengers a year. East Midlands Airport is within one hour’s drive of the city, and Manchester Airport is connected directly to Sheffield by a direct train every hour.

The Sheffield Supertram with a network consisting of 37 miles of track and four lines allows passengers to get around the city cheaply and quickly.

High Speed 2 is a planned high speed rail link which will run between London at one end, and the cities of Manchester and Leeds at the other. Sheffield is set to be a major terminus of this route and will hugely benefit from the enormous infrastructure investment boosting the local economy and bridging the north – south divide. In turn, this will make Sheffield a more attractive place for people to live and work which will have knock on benefits for the housing market.

When finished HS2 will serve Sheffield Midland on a dedicated link with journey times predicted from Sheffield as follows:

  • East Midlands Hub – 27 minutes
  • Birmingham – 49 minutes (current time 63 minutes)
  • London – 87 minutes, (current time 121 minutes)
